Permissions & Use Policies

Please review our policies below to see if your project falls within our terms. If it does, you are welcome to proceed without contacting us for additional permission. Please note that we are not approving the development of any new apps at this time unless they are substantially different from existing apps in content.

This Use Policy (the “Policy”) applies to the Catechism (defined below) and the Prayer Book (defined below), each of which are protected by copyright and intellectual property laws identified below (collectively, the “Works”) and which are published by Anglican House Publishers (“Publisher”) by arrangement with the Anglican Church in North America (“ACNA”). BY PURCHASING, QUOTING, OR DOWNLOADING THE WORKS, YOU AGREE TO THE TERMS OF THIS POLICY AND ACKNOWLEDGE THAT ACNA IS THE SOLE OWNER OF COPYRIGHT IN AND TO THE WORKS.

Publisher has adopted this Policy in consultation with ACNA and for the purpose of administering the Works in a manner which furthers the religious and missional purposes of the Works and ACNA through a process which stewards and protects the integrity of the Works.

Non-Commercial Use Guidelines:
Portions of The Book of Common Prayer (2019) may be reproduced for liturgical and non-commercial educational use without prior permission, subject to the following conditions:

Quotation Limits:
a. Non-commercial ministry use. Short excerpts from text of the Prayer Book (not to exceed 2,500 words or 10%, whichever is less) may be quoted in a single work which includes both ministry related and non-commercial purposes, without written permission from Publisher. 
b. Other Non-Commercial use. No more than 500 words of liturgical text, or one complete liturgy or office (whichever is less) from the Prayer Book may be quoted in any single work for non-commercial, non-ministry purposes without written permission from Publisher.
c. Reproduction by ACNA Churches and Ministries. ACNA churches and other ACNA ministries and affiliates may reproduce all or part of the Prayer Book in church services or to facilitate religious rites; provided that any such reproduction must be an unedited reproduction of the selected text from the Prayer Book.

Attribution Required: All quotations and reproductions must include the following acknowledgment: Excerpts from The Book of Common Prayer (2019), Anglican Church in North America. Used by permission of Anglican House.

Brief Citations: For church bulletins, orders of service, and similar non-commercial liturgical materials used in relation to religious services or rites, a shortened attribution may be used: BCP (2019).

Restrictions: Notwithstanding any other provision herein:

  • The Prayer Book may not be adapted into any derivative work without the written permission of Publisher.
  • The text of the Prayer Book may not be quoted in a manner which changes the underlying meaning of the Prayer Book or which is inconsistent or contrary to the doctrinal statements of ACNA.
  • The text of the Prayer Book may not be quoted in any publication made available under a Creative Commons license.
  • Except for ACNA churches and other ACNA ministries and affiliates who are authorized to reproduce the entire text of the Prayer Book under this Policy, the complete text of the Prayer Book may not be reproduced or made available in any format (including, for download, electronic, digitally, print, PDF, ebook, or any other format) without written permission of Publisher, even if offered for free.
  • The text of the Prayer Book may not be translated in whole or in part into any other language without written permission from Publisher.
  • The Prayer Book may not be ingested into or used to train any artificial intelligence or machine learning (“AI”) tool, model, chatbot, agent, platform, or product of any kind without written permission from Publisher.
  • The Prayer Book may not be used to develop, create, or otherwise operate any AI tool, model, chatbot, agent, platform, product of any kind, or to assist such AI tool to produce any content of any kind, in each case, without written permission from Publisher.
  • Complete editions of the Prayer Book may not be published, distributed, or imported for commercial distribution without written authorization from Publisher.
  • No edition of the Prayer Book in any format, and no work adapted from or containing quotes from the Prayer Book as authorized in this Policy, may be published or distributed commercially without written permission from Publisher. In this Policy, “commercial use” includes any use of a Work in a product or activity which will not be made available to the public completely free of charge.

Liturgical Use: Local congregations of the Anglican Church in North America may reproduce portions of the Prayer Book for use in worship services and parish education without additional permission from Publisher.

Academic and Scholarly Use: Academic works including dissertations, scholarly articles, and materials for non-commercial and educational courses may exceed the quotation word limit set forth in this Policy, provided that all quotations are properly cited and attributed as provided in this Policy and that all other provisions of this Policy are followed.

Websites and Blogs: Non-commercial websites and blogs may reproduce liturgical texts from the Prayer Book within the limits stated in this Policy above, provided proper attribution is included on the same page as the quoted material. ACNA Church websites may post complete orders of service which incorporate portions of the Prayer Book for upcoming or recent worship services.

Podcasts and Recorded Services: ACNA Churches and ACNA affiliated ministries may record and distribute worship services, teaching content, and prayer offices that use Prayer Book liturgies. Audio attribution must be given in the recording or description as follows: “Liturgy from The Book of Common Prayer (2019), Anglican Church in North America.”

Livestreaming and Video: ACNA Churches may livestream or record worship services using the Prayer Book liturgies without additional permission. Liturgical text may be displayed on screen without additional attribution or permission.

Mobile Apps and Digital Tools: Developers wishing to include content from the Prayer Book in mobile applications, web applications, or digital tools must contact Publisher for permission, regardless of whether the app is free or for commercial use. This includes but is not limited to: catechism apps, daily office apps, prayer apps, or liturgical resources, educational software, or other digital or electronic tools, platforms, or products of any kind.

Commercial Use, Translations, and Extended Quotations: Unless expressly authorized in this Policy, no one may use or exercise any rights of copyright of any kind in relation to the Prayer Book unless approved by Publisher in writing. All rights in and to the Prayer Book are reserved to Publisher and/or ACNA. Requests for commercial publication rights, translations, or quotations exceeding the above guidelines must be submitted in writing to:

Podcasts and Audio Recordings: Non-commercial podcasts, sermon recordings, teaching videos, and other audio/video content may include readings from the Catechism for non-commercial purposes within the limits of the Policy stated above. Attribution must be given verbally or in show notes/video descriptions as follows: “Reading from To Be a Christian: An Anglican Catechism, copyright 2020 by the Anglican Church in North America.”
